Privacy Policy

PreThink AI (“PreThink,” “we,” “us”) is a local-first Chrome extension and website. This policy covers both. The extension does not send your AI usage data to our servers.
Our promise
PreThink tracks patterns, not prompts. We do not store the content of your AI conversations, and we do not operate a cloud account for extension usage data.
Chrome extension — what stays on your device
The extension stores usage metadata in Chrome’s local storage on your computer. It is not synced to PreThink servers. Uninstalling the extension, or using Reset data in the popup, deletes it.
We store:
- Which supported AI tool you used (for example ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot)
- Session start and end times, and estimated active duration
- How many prompts you sent (counts and timestamps, not the text)
- When you switched between those AI tools
- Whether you used or skipped in-product nudges (think-first, loop wrap-up)
- Your theme and feature toggles
We do not store:
- Prompt or response text
- Your guesses typed into the think-first overlay
- Account credentials, cookies, or chat history from those sites
- A log of websites outside the AI tools listed above
Chrome extension — what we read but do not store
On supported AI sites, the extension runs a content script so it can tell when you send a message and optionally pause you before the first send. To show the think-first overlay, it briefly reads the text currently in the composer (truncated) and displays it in the overlay. That text is not written to storage and is discarded when the overlay closes.
Permissions
- storage — save the local usage metadata and settings described above.
- alarms — periodically check whether you are still in an AI session so idle time is not counted as use.
- Host access (ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot only) — inject the tracker and overlays on those sites, and see tab URLs for those sites so sessions start and stop correctly.
We do not request permission to read your other tabs or browsing history. If you leave an AI tab, we treat that as leaving the session without recording where you went.
Export
If you click Export, PreThink downloads a JSON file of the local metadata to your computer. You choose whether to keep or share that file. We do not receive a copy.
Website — product updates and contact
If you sign up for product updates on prethinkai.com, we collect your email and optional role so we can share new features and tips, or respond if you use the form to contact us. That form is processed by Formspree on our behalf. It is separate from the extension and is not linked to your local usage data. Installing from the Chrome Web Store does not require this form.
What we do not do
- We do not sell your data.
- We do not use extension data for advertising.
- We do not use it to train AI models.
- The extension does not include analytics, crash reporting, or remote code.
Data retention
Extension data remains on your device until you reset it or uninstall the extension. We do not currently auto-delete older sessions. Product-update emails are kept until you ask us to remove them or we stop the list.
Children
PreThink is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect their data.
Changes
If we add cloud sync, accounts, or any server that receives usage data, we will update this policy before that ships and will declare it in the Chrome Web Store privacy practices.
